Kumite (Sparring)
Kumite (translates literally as grappling hands), and is the term used to describe sparring. Kumite is undertaken in highly disciplined and controlled situations, in training, and in competition. At the more free-style level, mouth guards and padded mittens are used to minimise risks. Karate was developed as a means of self defence and will invariably involve some physical contact. Within the ‘Dojo’ (and in competitions), the aim in Kumite is to demonstrate a fully focused attack without making physical contact with your opponent.
As a beginner, kumite will be basic and will consist of basic punching and kicking, and a block and counter, usually starting from a Heiko Dachi (ready postion) or a Zenkutsu Dachi with Gedan Barai. This is to help build judgement of distance and to improve technique. As you progress, Kumite will involve stepping (3 or 5 step) in attack and in defense, with increasing control, urgency and interconnectedness, in conjunction with an opponent.
