Kobujutsu

Kobujutsu is the study and practice of the use of weapons within Martial Arts. Practicing Kobujutsu would normally require a firm foundation of Karate knowledge, as there are similar stances, terms and techniques. Similarly to Karate, Kobujutsu training and competitions comprise of Kata, and Kumite.

For training and practice, wooden, blunted, and foam versions are produced, and with ceremonial versions for use in demonstration and competition.

The weapons include;

Bo

The Bow is a hard wood (Oak) staff, around 175 centimetres in length, tapering slightly to its end, with a waist of around 3 centimeters

Sai

Sai, are 3 pronged weapon, often used in a pair. The outer prongs are used to trap (and break) other weapons.

Nunchuku

Two wooden handles, connected by chain (or cord)

Tonfa

Short c40 cm baton with perpendicular handle.

Kama

Handheld bladed weapon with handle of about 35 cm at 90 degrees.

Eku

Long blade hard wood oar – around 165 cm in length, and 10cms across the flat blade of the oar

Tinbe-rochin

Sheild and short spear, the shield is traditionally a turtle shell, but is commonly made in cane with resin, fiber glass or metal. The spear is around 80-100 cms in length.

Tekko

A form of knuckle duster, that sits across the palm, and around the knuckles – with spiked (exaggerated knuckles) and sometimes an exaggerated spike at each side at 90 degrees

Surujin

Weighted chain, (or cord) with a small stones, metal weights or leather bag (8cm&5cm*3cm) bag filled with for example gravel, or lead shot, attached to its end. This may also have a metal spike attached to the other end.

Kobujutsu Kata

There are variations in Kobujutsu Kata, including the recognition of the Okinawan styles and those attributed to celebrated Senseis.
